Mixing Of Drums in Ableton Live

In our first blog on mixing, we have DJ and producer, Chittebabu sharing with us on how he mixes in his drum elements in his tracks. Using only Ableton’s stock EQ and compressor plug-ins, Chittebabu skillfully brings out the favours of each drum element. Learn Chitttebabu’s simple but effective method of using the EQ8 plug-in and the techniques involved from a producer’s point of view.

For the kick, he is using Ableton’s Sampler and using a sample of a simple 909 kick. In EQ8 he turns to the Mid/Side mode, which allows him to work both on the stereo and mono frequencies. He then cuts out frequencies that are not in tune with the track and adding on Ableton’s compressor to compress and bring out the punch in the kick.

Next, he works on the claps using EQ8 again. Cutting away most of the low frequencies below 500Hz, he brings out the highs in the claps. This allows the claps to sound punchy and compact. He also adds a touch of reverb using Valhalla’s Vintage Verb plug-in.

Lastly, he rounds up by mixing in the cymbals. A dash of reverb and delay, the cymbals adds flavour the drums as a whole.

Mixing is a skill which gets better with practice and with good ear training. You also need quality monitoring headphones to assist you. Browse our collection of headphones at www.audioportals.com.
